Tons of people get a pet before they get a child thinking that it's going to be the easier option, but that's not always true.

Pets don't get into the same trouble that your child will necessarily, but they're definitely going to get into some weird stuff. Plus, you have the language barrier, so it's not like you can explain to your dog that he shouldn't eat your PhD certificate, whereas you could at least tell your child.
